Outdoor Learning at a Glance (PDF). A one-page summary for each year group, showing the kinds of outdoor experiences children will enjoy across the year. These are written as a broad overview rather than a fixed programme, because our outdoor learning follows the seasons and the weather.

  • Early Years (EYFS): Planting, nature walks, minibeast hunts and early canal exploring. Our youngest children learn through play, mud and all their senses.
  • Year 1: Growing from seed, listening for sounds along the canal, getting to know our trees and a trip on the canal.
  • Year 2: Canal walks, map reading, meeting the people who look after the canal, and growing food for a picnic to share.
  • Year 3: Growing and cooking a class meal, canal scavenger hunts, orienteering and making art from natural materials.
  • Year 4: Surveying canal wildlife, foraging, outdoor cooking, bird watching and building and testing small rafts.
  • Year 5: Monitoring the canal through the year, mapping its course, building shelters and designing activities for younger children.
  • Year 6: Becoming leaders of the outdoor curriculum by planning crops, teaching younger children and caring for our environment.
