British Values

At Melbourne Primary School our 5 core values Care, Imagine, Believe, Strive, Achieve’ underpin all aspects of our school life including Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development and British Values.

We believe that our existing principles, ethos, missions statement, policies, practices and curriculum, all reflect, promote and reinforce ‘fundamental British Values’, values as stated by Department of Education and Science (DfE) and Ofsted. These values are:

What British Values look like at Melbourne School...    

 

Democracy

 

  • Children are involved in and influence the democratic process when standing for elections and voting e.g. for school council members.
  • Democratic processes are taught through our core values, curriculum and assemblies. (RE, PSCHE, Global Learning, Circle time, E-safety).
  • Pupil voice is given high priority within our school.
  • We carry out pupil and parent questionnaires to gauge all views, e.g. when deciding upon our core values.
  • We have an active School Council who represent their classes and their views.
  • We use argument/discussion texts as part of our curriculum to develop children’s understanding of different points of views and debate.
  • Injustice is challenged as part of our Behaviour Charter and children are encouraged to negotiate and reconcile issues.
  • Year 5 and 6 children are invited to join in with the Humberside Police Lifestyle project.

 

 

 

Rule of Law

 

  • Our School Behaviour Charter enforces our rewards and consequence systems.
  • Class rules are enforced and agreed at the beginning of each year, and are reinforced as needed.
  • Assemblies  and lessons focussing on behaviour, rules, moral lessons as well as different rules for different contexts (civil, legal, religious, road safety, library, etc.) 
  • Children are given the opportunity for reflection on moral questions as part of assemblies, Circle Time, PSHCE, etc. 
  • Children and Parent questionnaire about behaviour, safety, etc. support school decision making.
  • Visitors come to school to enhance different topics.
  • Restorative justice is practised to resolve conflicts.

 

Individual Liberty

 

  • Our school core values are based on the British values ethos.
  • We believe in equality and fairness for all pupils in school.
  • Pupils are supported to develop self knowledge, self esteem & self confidence.
  • Children are taught to understand responsibility in terms of behaviour and learning attitudes.
  • Social responsibilities are taught through curriculum assemblies, RE, PSHCE, Circle Time and E-safety and other collective worship. 
  • We model freedom of speech through pupil participation, whilst ensuring respect for others views and promoting critical analysis of evidence. 
  • Safety and an anti -bullying culture. 
  • Ecological awareness & responsibility for our world is taught through Global Learning. 
  • Community involvement & links e.g. Methodist Chapel, Pocklington Canal association.
  • Will get involved in National charity fundraising.
  • Challenging of stereotypes
  • Variety of clubs are run in school to enhance and develop children’s own interests.
  • Year 5 and 6 children are invited to join in with the Humberside Police Lifestyle project.

  • Our assemblies / lessons focussing on tolerance, respect, attitudes to others and celebrating similarities & differences.  Links to our core values.
  • We give children the opportunity for reflection as part of assemblies, Circle Time, PSHCE, etc. 
  • Stories are read from world faiths and cultures.
  • Our RE Curriculum following the East Riding Locally Agreed Syllabus.
