Melbourne Community Primary School

Friends of School

Who are we?

The Friends of School are a group of parents whose aim is to raise funds to assist with the cost of extras that the school provides for the children to help improve their experience at Melbourne Community Primary School.

Where does the money raised go?

So far this academic year we have provided £300 for new goal posts and have recently agreed to fund the refurbishment of the main wooden climbing frame in the playground at a cost of around £500. We have also provided welcome refreshments to the children during their amazing performances of the Christmas school production. At present we are in the early stages of planning our next big spend- watch this space!

Our main aim is to use the funds raised to enhance the experiences of every child in the school, from improving sporting facilities to extending the range and access pupils have to excellent reading materials. In recent years we have bought playground equipment, reading books and sports equipment, provided new hall curtains as well as funding a visiting school pantomime and contributing to the cost of school trips. We have also helped with the purchase and installation of the projector and audio equipment for school hall, an electronic library system, and new ICT software to support the current curriculum including headphones and science software. Friends of School also purchase the book bags each child is provided with when they start school in nursery or reception and the gifts our Y6 leavers are presented with when they leave for pastures new.

We are aiming to raise at least £2000 in this school year, and have a calendar of events lined up which will be fun for everyone as well as raising money for the school. If any parent has a suggestion as to what the money could be used for, please contact the Friends of School.

What type of events/activities do we do?

In the past couple of years we have organised the following events:

Halloween Disco

Valentines Disco

Christmas carols in the playground with refreshments and a sweet bag tombola.

Raffles at the school Christmas performances

Easter egg Tombola

Leavers disco

Summer BBQ and treasure hunt, including bottle tombola and sweet stall

Bags2school collections, (twice each year).

The giving machine

In addition to supporting our organised events you can raise money for Melbourne Community Primary School, just by shopping online through the giving machine. There are no catches and it's really simple – just shop online via www.thegivingmachine.co.uk with hundreds well known retailers like Amazon, Argos, M&S, eBay (and many more!) and whenever you buy something online, the retailer makes a donation to your chosen good cause.  It doesn't cost you a single penny extra.

With Christmas a distant memory, you may be considering booking a summer holiday. Booking through www.thegivingmachine.co.uk  will generate a substantial free cash donation and with lots of the best travel companies taking part, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

I am interested, when and where do we meet?

Being part of the committee is not a huge commitment and it is very rewarding as well as a great way to meet other parents and have fun being involved in our fundraising events.

We usually meet on the 2nd week back of each half term during the evening at the Melbourne Arms and would welcome new members to our friendly team. You may only wish to be involved with one event throughout the year or just come along to find out what is coming up. We welcome any ideas you may have for fundraising events or activities and suggestions on ways to spend money raised. Attending meetings isn't compulsory; you may wish to be a “friend of the friends” and help out at events as and when you can. If you are interested in joining our email list for friends of the friends please get in touch and we will keep you up to date on upcoming events by email.
 How to contact us:

We can be contacted either via email at bexadams123@gmail.com or if you prefer to contact by telephone, please leave a message and a telephone number with the school office and we will get in touch promptly!
